Norse Overpower the Lumberjacks

Jillian Fraser eyes up a three-point attempt while a defender closes in

ESCANABA, MI – The Norse Women's Basketball Team (15-3, 4-0 MCCAA) stayed undefeated in MCCAA Northern Conference play with a 119-40 romping of the Alpena Community College Lumberjacks (4-10, 0-4 MCCAA) on Wednesday evening.

The shorthanded Lumberjacks had no answer for the defensive pressure of the Norse, who applied a full court press well into the second quarter.  Alpena would turn the ball over 25 times before half and only manage three points in the second quarter.

Meanwhile the Norse offense buried their guests in the second quarter, shooting 60.7%, including four of nine from three-point, three of which were off the hand of Jillian Fraser (FR, St. Ignace, MI).  It resulted in a dominant 62-14 lead at halftime for Bay College.

The Norse focused on half court defense in the second half, which allowed Alpena to generate a little more offense, but they proved to be no match for Bay as they continued to steamroll their opponents.  The Norse ended up with a 79-point win on their homecourt.

Bay forced 40 turnovers in the game and outrebounded Alpena 48-35.  That resulted in a huge discrepancy in shot totals, with Bay putting up 102 attempts, while Alpena only mustered 45 field goals.

Fraser ended up with the best game in her career.  She hit on seven of ten from behind the three-point arc on her way to 25 points.  She also had three assists and four steals.  Lauren Zawada (SO, Bark River, MI) finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals.  Mckenzie Hoffmeyer (SO, Bark River, MI) had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and four steals, while Makenna Hendrickson (SO, Baraga, MI) totaled 12 points, five rebounds, six assists, and five steals.

Nine players suited up for Bay in the game, all of which scored.  Eight of the nine reached double-digits in scoring.

Brooke Portice (FR, Pickford, MI) was the leading scorer for Alpena.  She finished with 23 points and six rebounds.

The Norse finish off the short homestand with a matchup against Delta College (10-8, 3-1 MCCAA) on Saturday afternoon.  Delta is coming off of a 90-57 loss to Mid Michigan College on Wednesday evening.  Saturday's game will tip at 1 pm.
