The Norse Sweep Conference Opener

SIDNEY, MI – The Bay College Norse Volleyball Team (6-4, 1-0 MCCAA) swept Montcalm Community College (3-9, 0-1 MCCAA) on the road, winning by scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 27-25.  The Norse have won six of their last seven matches.

Bay came out with energy and were able to use that to control the action early on.  They were able to connect on 14 kills and had just four attacking errors in the first set.  Jade Jasenovsky (SO, Menominee, MI) helped set the pace with seven digs in the first set, as the Norse cruised in the opening set.

The Norse put up their best offensive performance in the second set.  They needed just 38 attacks to collect 11 kills, and had just one attack error.  That offensive pressure kept the Centurions on their heels, as they needed just 12 digs to dominate the second set.

Montcalm was not about about to go quietly on their home court.  "Montcalm did a better job handling our serves in the third set," said Bay's Head Coach Dan Porath.  "We didn't get a chance to go on as many runs."

Bay matched their first set attack percentage, once again committing just four attack error, while putting down 15 kills. Ava Maki (FR, Marquette, MI) stepped up in the final set with seven kills. The Centurions forced Bay into extra points, but the Norse would get an ace from Mia Hauser (SO, Wallace, MI) to close out the set and the match.

"We won the serve and pass game today," said Porath.  "In general if we pass better and serve, we are tough.  The girls played great.  They did a great job bringing energy to Montcalm's gym."

Addie Morton (SO, Ishpeming, MI) had a strong night, connecting on 12 kills in 38 attempts and had no attack errors.  Maki ended her day with 11 kills.  Hope Varoni (FR, Bark River, MI) had 36 assists and chipped in with nine digs. Hauser had five service aces.

Jasenovsky finished the match with 15 digs, while Maki and Hauser each had ten.

The Norse are looking forward to feeding off the energy of a home crowd for the first time this year as they will have their home opener on Wednesday evening.  They continue with conference play as North Central Michigan will come to town for a 6:30 pm start.
