ESCANABA, MI – The Bay College Norse Women's Basketball team (14-11) finished off their inaugural season with a 69-58 win over the Gogebic Community College Samsons (16-14) on Saturday afternoon.
Though the Norse would never trail in the matchup, they would not be able to pull away from their guests until late in the matchup. After Bay would start the game on an 11-3 run, the Samsons would fight back, and make it a one-point game late in the first quarter. The Norse would finish out the opening quarter outscoring GCC 11-2 to open up a second double-digit lead.
From there the Samsons would not get any closer than seven points in the first half. The Norse would finish on another run, this time a 10-3 advantage to before the half would make the score 40-26 at intermission.
The second half would continue along the same storyline. Bay would hold a multiple score lead, but Gogebic would trail by just seven with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter. That would be the last time the game would be as close, as the Norse would quickly open up a double-digit lead and hold it throughout the final period. Bay would lead by as many as 15 down the stretch and would take the game with an 11-point margin.
Teidra Fuson (FR, Norway, MI) ended up as the leading scorer for the Norse, netting 19 points while grabbing ten rebounds and blocking three shots. Jordan Kraemer (FR, Norway, MI) would also be credited with a double-double, scoring 15 points, collecting 11 rebounds, and tallying five steals. Paige Welch (FR, Bark River, MI) would score 12 points, while Caitlin Hewitt (SO, Ishpeming, MI) would end with ten points and six rebounds.
Gogebic's Lori Wardynski (SO, Ontonagon, MI) led all scorers with 24 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Bailey Froberg (FR, L'Anse, MI) added 18 points and six rebounds.
The win caps off a successful first season for the Norse. They end three games above .500 with a 14-11 record.
