The Norse Close Season With Late Comeback

ESCANABA, MI – The Bay College Norse (21-8) would finish off their season in exciting fashion, coming from behind to overtake the Gogebic Community College Samsons (14-14) by a score of 81-79 on Saturday.

Bay College would start the game jumping out to an 11-4 lead, but would see it go by the wayside quickly.  The Samsons would hit 16 of 32 attempts from the floor in the first half and would claim their first lead of the game with 9:33 remaining in the first half.  GCC would use their hot hand to build a 40-35 lead at the break.

Gogebic would continue to shoot the ball well in the second half, including finding their touch from long range.  They would hit seven of 13 from behind the three-point arc and build a ten-point lead with 9:26 remaining.  The Norse would get hot from there, shooting 54.8% from the floor in the second half.  An 11-3 Bay College run would make the game tight down the stretch.

The Samsons would get a big three-point basket from Trevor Cook (Washburn, WI) that would put them up four with just over a minute to play.  After missing on an open look, the Norse were forced to foul and send their guests to the line.  Bay would catch a break when Gogebic would miss the front end of bonus free throws and Dre Tuominen (FR, Negaunee, MI) would pull down the rebound.  His ensuing drive down the right side of the lane would end with him being fouled as his shot banked into the basket.  Tuominen would convert the three-point play at the charity stripe, making it a one-point game.  The Norse defense would step up in the clutch, and Marcus McKenney (FR, Menominee, MI) would be credited with steal.  Gogebic would foul Tuominen again, who made both free throws to give the Norse the lead with 31 seconds remaining.  The Samsons would have one last possession to take the lead back, but their attempt would be blocked by Kobi Barnes (FR, Milwaukee, WI) and the Norse would recover the rebound.  Tuominen would make the trip to the line, and would hit one of the two tries with three seconds remaining.  Gogebic's last second try would fall off the front of the rim and Bay would take the two-point victory.

Tyler Willette (FR, Escanaba, MI) would lead all scorers with 25 points and grabbed six rebounds.  Barnes would net 24 points and collect nine rebounds.  Tuominen would finish with 16 points, nine rebounds, and six assits.

Garfield Voker (Racine, WI) would lead the Samsons with 23 points and eight rebounds.  Cook would net 21 while grabbing five rebounds.

Bay College finishes the season with 21 wins.
